Habits, Not Resolutions

Happy New Year to everyone! The start of the year is the time when our spirit and ambition are high, but as time goes on, we know that excitement quickly subsides. There are a multitude of reasons why it does fade--time, work, family commitments, health, etc.---I get it. It is a challenge to be 100 all year long but there is a way to stay consistent and motivated throughout the year.

I am all for everyone wanting to make changes to their lives, as I am a huge believer in evolving and growing. There's no better way to set resolutions for goals for some. I want to take it a step further and discuss habits. When it comes to resolutions, sometimes with goal setting, is that when we reach it, then we believe that the work is done. I speak to habits because those resolutions and goals we set, are things that we want to make a part of who we are long-term, just not for the ' now '. There's a belief that a person must do something for 21 days to consider it to be a habit but I believe it is ' in you, not on you '. What that means, is that it is something you believe, breathe, and execute without thinking. So that 21-day number I believe is arbitrary as can be less or more, but the ultimate goal is for it to be a part of you.

Here are a few tips:

Start small: Start with something you believe is attainable with where you are now. Starting too big can be discouraging and it can lead to burnout.

Align with Self: Oftentimes, we create goals for others and not for ourselves. Making sure that it is personal helps keep you motivated.

Balance: There are different areas in our lives (finances, health, family, work, etc.) that we want to tackle. Try to have balance across the board so that your focus is solely on one or two spots and you end up neglecting other aspects that complete you.

Share: Find a person or persons you trust to share with that can encourage and hold you accountable.

Here's to an awesome year that will bring excitement, uncertainty, and unexpected opportunities.
